Updated: Feb 27, 2022

U12’s EIHA Home Fixture at Milton Keynes Planet Ice - 9th January 2022

Sunday 9th January at Planet Ice, Milton Keynes, saw the U12's record their first win of the season against Solent.

Period 1

Right from the first puck drop the U12's were demonstrating their desire to win the game, winning the face off and going straight on the attack. The first line were more than a match for the Solent first line and it was the two first lines that kicked off the scoring. Solent against the run of play managed to pick up a rebound, following an excellent save from Gregory, our Netminder, to make it 0-1. Almost immediately from the restart Ward managed to pick up the puck, hold off two defenders and slot an excellent finish to make it 1-1.

Across all 3 lines MK Storm were excelling against their opponents and this was demonstrated on the 3rd line with the speedy Totman outstripping the Solent defence and beating the keeper on a 1v1, following a beautiful pass from Jacobson, to make it 2-1 to MK Storm. Solent managed to weather the "Storm" and again managed a breakaway goal against the run of play to leave it 2-2 at the end of the first period.

Period 2

The second period began in the same vein as the first, with MK Storm taking the game to Solent. The second line of MK Storm really came into their own and were causing Solent problems on every shift. Some beautiful play from Ayres, beating two solent defenders wide, saw him slide a beautiful pass across the goal for Jordan to slam home giving MK Storm a 3-2 lead. The same combination, 4 minutes later, increased MK Storm's lead with Ayres who passed to Jordan in his own half and Jordan beat two Solent defenders, before slotting high to the keepers glove side to make it 4-2 to MK Storm.

Further chances came and went for MK Storm. Solent were slowly finding their way back into the game. Gregory, in only his 2nd appearance in goal, maintained MK Storm's lead with a number of outstanding saves. Solent thought they had reduced the deficit when a shot was fired in, but it came off the face cage of Gregory and spun into the net. The referees ruled 'no goal' and play was restarted.

Period 3

MK Storm were tiring in the 3rd period having put so much effort in the previous two periods and Solent were finding a second wind. Again Gregory was denying them time and time again. MK Storm turned the tables on Solent and added a fifth goal courtesy of the excellent Miles. She found herself with space and made no mistake with a clinical finish, with a new stick, to put MK Storm 5-2 up. Solent snatched a consolation goal to make it 5-3, eventually finding a way past the impressive shot stopper, Gregory.

On the final buzzer the crowd and Storm players went wild, with players crowding Gregory for such an impressive display. Quite rightly the Player of the Game went to Gregory who posted an impressive 87% save rate.

Congratulations to all the U12's who played out of their skin and secured the first win of the season. I somehow don't think it will be the last!

Player of the Game

Gregory was named Player of the Game for his impressive save rate on his second appearance in goal.
