Last call for equipment donations
In last months newsletter we made a request for donations of equipment, old sticks, pucks etc and also for funds to purchase some new training equipment or materials to build some. Many thanks to all those who have donated, we have raised around £280 so far which will go towards some of the equipment below.
We would love to purchase more to aide the kids in their development on and off the ice so if you haven't already please can we request you make a small donation to assist. The bank details are account no: 43133390 sort code: 09-06-66 and the name of the account is M K J I H C. The name of the account requires spaces between the letters.
Also if you have any old sticks or pucks to donate we can use these to build training aides. Please bring any of these to training.
We Win and You Could Too!
As a club we are investigating all options to increase funding into the club which can be re-invested into player development.
To that end we have partnered with the Support Sport Lottery to raise extra funds for the club. You can support us by playing the Support Sport Lottery. We’ll receive 50% of the lottery proceeds and you could win up to £25,000 in the weekly draw! This allows friends and family of the players an opportunity to support the player and the club whilst giving them the chance of a very nice payday.
The lottery works by registering to a monthly payment for entries and there is a draw each week. For every £1 paid MK Storm will receive 50% of this. You can find the sign up page here: https://supportsportlottery.com/mk-storm-junior-ice-hockey-club/
To maximise the support we can generate it would be great if you could forward to family and friends to sign up.
Thank you for your support and good luck!
More Ice Time = Better Skate Skills
If you watch any hockey game today, you may notice something interesting. When the players are on the ice, they only have control of the puck every so often. They get an opportunity to pass infrequently, and the same goes for taking a shot at the net. However, there’s something that every hockey player is always doing while playing the game: skating.
Yeah, I guess that’s obvious, but that’s why skating is considered one of the most important skills in the sport of hockey. You can be a good stick handler and shooter and if you practice & improve your skating, it will help improve these and other skills as well. All hockey players need solid skating skills to become better at the game, and many coaches preach it and take the time to teach it as they should.
In line with the above we would like all Storm Members to know about the 6 session saver cards available from Planet Ice. You can purchase these cards from Planet Ice for £39 which means you can access public skate sessions for £6.50. Just ask at reception to purchase these cards as they are not available online. Regular public skate sessions helps with fundamental skating skills and stability on the ice, which in turn helps with all aspects of the game.
New Fixture Secretary - Parents Needed!
It takes a lot of effort and co-ordination to run MK Storm and without the help and support of parent volunteers we would not be able to run the club. Many of the volunteers currently helping the club have been doing so for a number of years and as their children leave the club we need some new volunteers to assist in taking over these duties.
Corinne MacGarvey our current fixtures secretary has been doing the role for the last 5 years and is due to take a well earned rest at the end of the season. We are looking for parent volunteers to take over this role once Corrine steps down. Volunteers would have the opportunity to be trained by Corrine during the rest of this season to make sure that they were ready to go by the time next season comes around.
Some of the key duties for the role are:
Good organisation skills, ability to use excel (or similar) to arrange the fixtures.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Assess and understand information that will impact fixtures (teams sharing players, coaches, ice time, rink bookings, season end dates for different age groups etc, and awareness of the EIHA rules for fixtures)
Ability to keep track of changes - there is a peak of work July/Aug/Sept but if there are changes during the season you sometimes need to act quickly to avoid ice fees etc.
If you feel you have the above please send your details to mkstorm.secretary@gmail.com
Bench Policy Reminder
Just a quick reminder to all parents that the bench area and block 13 seating area is out of bounds to parents during training and games. This is to fulfill our safeguarding and insurance commitments as a club. A nominated club representative will be available during training and games to ensure that any players injured or needing assistance have it.
Also following training sessions no children should be getting kitted up or down in the bench area due to the risk of stray puck from the following training session. If there are any concerns regarding any of this please contact your age group manager of any of the committee.
Rink Boards
Keep an eye out around the rink in the next week or so to see our new MK Storm Junior Ice Hockey rink boards.
